but i want to be an astronaunt!

i just read an article on Relevant about the whole getting stuck in some 9-5 job trap that happens to so many people who keep dreaming about doing something that they love that will actually make a difference in the world. excuse my lack of wit, but i really couldn't think of a shorter way to describe that.

however, the article leaves me thinking: it really seems that literally everyone wants to "make a difference in the world"/be a do-gooder and all the other associated cliche verbiage. why then, do so many people get stuck not doing what they want? what is wrong with our living system that it so often times traps individuals into careers they want nothing to be a part of? is it merely the fact that they feel forced to keep up with capitalist living demands? or some more subconscious belief in or fear of breaking the norm?

more so, how is this apparent problem alleviated? should everyone really quit Starbucks and go work at a medical station in the Congo? or are these seemingly mundane jobs really as life-changing and world-moving as the more illustrative adventures we all dream of? what would happen without all of McDonald's' employees or the people working in real-life equivalents of Dunder Mifflin? perhaps all of these are indeed needed, but there's no denying how people feel about their place in having them. do we need an attitude shift/realization? or are people merely all mixed up...wasting away in the "wrong" mundane career; i.e. maybe your local barista should really be working for the US Postal Service.

now going to school as an architect, i can't deny i fear falling into the trap of 9-5 monotony and have a clear conscious desire to fight it at all costs. but how do i do this in a world full of dreamers? how am i to stand out from the rest...and more so what right do i even have in doing so...and not get bogged down in society's prescriptions for life? and what if my having a typical architects' job was better for the world at large? where do my own interests resolve their conflict with God's bigger plan?
